I’m done with this year’s late “spring cleaning” and looking forward to a period of house creativity. By that I mean, new decor, new ideas, and some truly creative solutions for our home.
I’m jonesing to move to Lake Tahoe for more recreational activities – but yesterday I read something that made me pause, and ponder.
There are street gangs in South Lake Tahoe!
I’ve checked on housing possibilities there. I might have to live in a low income situation, and that might land me in the wrong apartment complex.
I don’t want to be in a situation where I have to wonder if my computer will be okay while I’m out hiking – as hiking is what I intend to do a lot of while I’m living in nature’s wonderland next to one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.
So, no way! I’m not going there yet.
I found out there are two apartment complexes for age 62 and older. I’m 60. That means two more years of waiting before I can even apply.
Meanwhile, I might as well fix up this house and stay a while, so long as it is possible.
I’ll talk about my reasons for wanting to move to Tahoe in another post.
This last month I washed walls and cleaned just about everything. I’m now thinking new paint would look nice on some of them.
I want to get a storage space and remove most of my books to that location, along with some of the furnishings, while we re-think what we have here. I can’t paint the office with all those books in there.
While I was planning my move to Lake Tahoe, I created a move-out plan that included storage spaces and box purchases – I’ll get new bankers boxes and Rubbermaid bins because when I move I like to look organized, not mish-mash. It helps me keep my sanity.
So let this be a new era of house creativity! I’m ready to put everything I don’t always use in storage then will go next-door to the Bigfoot Store and Deli to get a vegan deli sandwich which they graciously make for me at a slightly lowered price since I use no mayo, cheese, or meat.
Oh yes, the vegan thing is going well for me. I’m a 100% convert now, and am loving it.
Natural foods forever!
Anyhow, that deli is right next to the storage space I’ll be renting, to place all my excess stuff while I’m re-visioning my home.
I have a tie-dye tapestry hanging over the window in my office. It is orange, pink, white, and olive green. I’m thinking of using those colors more in that room. Paint the walls, paint the closet, paint the bookcase… and build a new desk out of 2x4s. I’m seriously not happy with the desk situation we have in there right now, which is an old card table.
I also need to dispose of two old file cabinets that look wretched. I’m not sure what kind of fix I can get for that… I’m thinking low-budget, since I’m also trying to pay off credit card debt. I’m using the debt snowball method and am nearly done paying Dell for the computer I’ve been using. Next will be the Discover card. So low-cost decor solutions are what I need, and I like that because it increases my creativity quota. House creativity is much more interesting to look at than stuff purchased at expensive furniture stores, don’t you think?
I’m thinking of re-purposing, upcycling, and using nature in creative ways. For example, in the bathroom, instead of installing a new towel rack I want to use two pieces of driftwood, cover them with decoupage glue to make them shiny and cleanable, and hang them from the ceiling with decoratively twisted copper wire.
In the hallway, I’ve hung a lot of my artwork. I’m thinking of getting new frames for my art – something I’ve never done – and painting the walls yellow and gold. The reason for that is that in Feng Shui the central part of the house symbolizes health, and yellows are perfect for that area. Greens are the worst. So yellow walls, and gold trim – something like that. You can get a lot of mileage out of a can of paint, in terms of how it makes your house look and feel better!
Okay, home projects await. I’m just waiting for my next payday to get started.
Upcycle, recycle, re-purpose, and get some house creativity started – those are my goals for the rest of the year. Looks like I’m not going anywhere right away.
