Three more hours, and I’ll be in the midst of a meeting of the local Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors! Am I ready? I’d better be! I’m their secretary this year! Honestly I couldn’t believe they wanted me to be their secretary. I asked for (and got) an assistant who has been secretary in the past – she’s my awesome friend here in town, and owner-editor of Happy Camp News.
So – to prepare – I’m printing out some email communications we received so everyone can take a look if they desire to. Not much else I have to do right now. Someone else is our telephone-answerer this year, thank goodness. My assistant is “Recording Secretary” so she does agendas and minutes. My only real job is to write and respond to correspondence. The secretary’s job is so huge and demanding, it makes sense to divide it between three people.
My significant other is still questioning why I decided to be part of this organization. Honestly, I enjoy promoting our community and talking it up with other people who care about it. Everyone has a business here, so we’ve all got a stake in the community, one way or another. Perhaps mine is most tenuous since I make my money on the internet, not here in town, for the most part.

Still, if I’m going to join a social club I prefer it to be a group of people who are doing something to help others succeed in business. Every business owner is a brave person who has taken a huge step away from job-dependency and toward self-sufficiency and providing for others. I see this as an uplifting group of people to associate with.
Our year together as the Happy Camp, California Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has just begun, so we’re still not entirely focused on what we’re going to be doing. One thing on the agenda tonight is that we’ll be reading our lists of ideas for projects. The president of the Chamber asked us all to bring in five ideas. I over-did it a bit with ten ideas, but that’s what enthusiasm will do to you!
My ideas included grant applications, a new office and a way to pay rent there, small business seminars, music weekends, and a small business expo… stuff like that. We’ll compile everyone’s ideas and then… auction them off! LOL … well, probably no idea-auction, but maybe come to a meeting of the minds on what’s necessary, what’s possible, and who will do what.
And now, I really have to get back to work!…
