I’m loving living in my new house! Three years and 104 days after the forest fire destroyed my home (and 200+ others) I moved into a new house and I’m so grateful for it!

Finished Reading This Month
✓ Romantic Suspense: Shadow of the Lynx, by Victoria Holt
I’m listening to all the Victoria Holt books available in audio format. This is my third since November. Finished 1/4/24. Four stars. My review.
✓ Romantic Suspense: The Stormy Petrel, by Mary Stewart
A college professor takes a vacation on a remote island in the Scottish Outer Hebrides. What could go wrong?
✓ Romantic Suspense: On the Night of the Seventh Moon, by Victoria Holt
This is another audiobook version of a Victoria Holt novel. I want to read all of her novels that are in audio version. Unfortunately, that’s only five or six books and she wrote others with that pseudonym.
What I’m Reading Now
★ Memoir: Desert Solitaire, by Edward Abbey
Beautiful nature writing at Arches National Park in Utah.
★ Classic Fiction: Les Misérables, by Victor Hugo
This novel is huge – 1456 pages in the paperback edition. I figure if I read 121 to 122 pages monthly during 2024 I’ll have it finished by the end of the year. Wish me luck. My intention is to read the Kindle version along with the audiobook version. Immersion reading, they call it.
★ Christian Nonfiction: Developing a Vision for Ministry, by Aubrey Malphurs
I’m reading this to learn more about developing ministry ideas and opportunities for women in my local community.
★ Christian Nonfiction: Life Lessons From James, by Max Lucado
This is a consumable workbook I’m reading and writing in along with a local Bible study group.
★ Christian Devotional: Earth Psalms: Reflections on How God Speaks Through Nature, by Francine Rivers
Beautiful book. I borrowed this audio version from the Cloud Library.
Planning to Read
☆ Romantic Suspense: The Devil on Horseback, by Victoria Holt
Normally I’d not read a book with the word “Devil” in the title but since this is by Victoria Holt I’m making an exception.
☆ Historical Fiction – Lord Hornblower, by C.S.Forester
There are 11 novels in this series and I’ve read 9 of them.
Impulse Reads
★ Christian Nonfiction: The Circle Maker: Praying Circles Around Your Biggest Dreams and Greatest Fears, by David Batterson
My pastor mentioned this book last Wednesday so I spent my last Audible credit to get a copy.
My January 2024 Reading Diary
January 1 – Happy New Year! Happy Birthday to my dearly loved father, Wayland Elman Martin (1924-2011). Today is the day of the Rose Parade. What is your favorite rose? I like two-toned roses especially orange and red, or red and white.
Today I got started on Les Misérables and also read a section of I’d Rather Be Reading by Anne Bogel. I’m also making progress in The Shadow of the Lynx by Victoria Holt.
A friend came to visit – that was nice.
January 2 – I made a video today! First video in four months!
January 3 – My main creative endeavor today was to make a cauliflower cheese casserole for a pot luck dinner at church. Great fun. It was my first cooking adventure using the new oven. I used this recipe but substituted cauliflower for the broccolie: Awesome Broccoli Cheese Casserole. I should have taken a picture but alas, I forgot.
January 4 – I’ve been recovering from the pot luck experience last night. I’m 71 now and it just takes time to recover every time I go out of my home it seems. Anyhow, I got a lot done today anyway. I’m still clearing things out of the trailer and then will deep-clean it before returning it to the lawful owners. I borrowed and lived in that trailer for three years!
January 7 – I finished reading The Shadow of the Lynx… 4 stars or 5? Hard to choose. Currently reading The Stormy Petrel by Mary Stewart.
January 15 – On the Night of the Seventh Moon was good, like a fairy tale told with many complexities. I finished rereading it last night. Also started audio-reading The Circle Maker.
