April 21, 2022 By Linda Jo Martin 4 Comments

Here’s a special fun event for readers of Christian fiction. A Booktube friend created what she calls a fictio-thon. Here’s what you need to know, to participate.

Here is Katie’s challenge video:

Christian Reading Challenge Prompts:

1. Flowers On the Cover.
2. With New Blooms Come New Authors: Read a New to You Author.
3. April Showers Bring May Murders: Read a Mystery or Thriller.
4. Spring Cleaning: Read a Book That Has Been On Your TBR the Longest…at least 6 months.
5. Spring Fever: Read a Romance Book, or a book that has a minor romantic plot.

What I’ll be reading:

I’m already heavily into reading Christian fiction right now so I’ll include what I’ve been reading in April.

✓ Here’s the group read:

Under the Tulip Tree
Under the Tulip Tree, by Michelle Shocklee

I finished reading this novel. It is about a young woman living during the Great Depression years of the 1930’s. She takes on a job provided by the government. As a writer her mission is to interview former slaves. The woman she interviews is elderly, age 101. This is a dual timeline novel with scenes from the 1930’s and from the Civil War.

✓ 1. Flowers on the cover

Under the Magnolias
Under the Magnolias, by T.I. Lowe

My Goodreads Review – ★★★★★
Touching! This is a YA coming of age story about a teenage girl in Central South Carolina who takes on a lot of heavy family responsibilities while living and working on a tobacco farm. Worth reading.

✓ 2. A new-to-me author

Bookseller's Promise
Bookseller’s Promise, by Beth Wiseman

My Goodreads Review – ★★★★★
This is a sweet, heartwarming Amish romance with some unexpected plot twists and plenty of books! A woman from Texas goes to an Amish town in Indiana to search for a special book.

✓ 3. A mystery or thriller

Her Mother's Hope
Concrete Evidence, by DiAnn Mills

My Goodreads Review – ★★★★
My first time to read a Christian murder mystery. Some of the characters are Christians. I like that this is set in Texas on a ranch!

4. A book that’s been on my TBR a long time

This is the last one I need to read, to complete this challenge.

Her Mother's Hope
Her Mother’s Hope, by Francine Rivers

✓ 5. A romance book

I decided to read the entire Refiner’s Fire historical romance series by Lynn Austin. All three books. They’re about the Civil War told from various perspectives. Great novels!

Candle In the Darkness
Candle in the Darkness, by Lynn Austin

My Goodreads Review – ★★★★★
In this novel Caroline is raised in a Southern slave-owning family. She loves and sympathizes with the slaves and becomes an abolitionist.

Fire By Night
Fire By Night, by Lynn Austin

My Goodreads Review – ★★★★★
In this novel Julia (Caroline’s cousin) decides the path to self-development is to become a Civil War nurse. Meanwhile another young woman, Phoebe, decides to disguise herself as a Civil War soldier!

A Light To My Path
A Light To My Path, by Lynn Austin

My Goodreads Review – ★★★★★
In this third novel of the series we meet Anne (aka: Kitty) and Grady, two slaves living in North Carolina during the Civil War.

Katie offers some book recommendations for this challenge:
